Hotel AI comparison · 2026

MAIIA vs Akia: a chat window is not necessarily a sales agent.

Akia presents a broad AI guest-lifecycle platform. We went past the claims and tested the part a new guest can actually see: the public website chat and its path towards a booking.

Hotel AI vendors increasingly promise the same outcome: instant answers, automated guest service, more direct bookings, upsells and less work for staff.

Akia is not only a website-chat product. Its public proposition includes guest messaging, phone calls, digital check-in, upsells, task workflows, reviews and post-stay communication. Those are meaningful capabilities and should be evaluated on their own terms.

This comparison asks a narrower buyer question: what happens when an undecided visitor opens the hotel website and expects the AI to help them choose and buy?

Scope of this review

Akia is primarily a guest-lifecycle communication and operations platform. MAIIA WSA is designed as a consultative website sales agent—from discovery to a verified commercial action.

Quick take

The short answer

  • Your priority is messaging across SMS, WhatsApp, email, OTA inboxes and web chat.
  • You need digital check-in, registration cards and scheduled guest journeys.
  • Pre-arrival, in-stay and post-stay workflows are the central buying problem.
  • You are prepared to validate the website-sales experience in your own implementation.

  • You want the hotel website to conduct a natural sales conversation.
  • You need recommendations, translated visual cards and verified booking paths.
  • You need automatic knowledge preparation and property-specific sales strategy.
  • You want A2A discovery, contextual lead routing and full-funnel demand intelligence.

Buyer criterion Akia MAIIA Website Sales Agent
Primary product logic One guest-experience platform for messaging, calls, arrivals, requests, upsells and reviews Hotel website discovery, consultative recommendation, visual selling and lead orchestration
Website-chat evidence Public implementations varied: offline states, unanswered messages, human follow-up and one card flow with failed booking links during our tests Natural WSA conversation with contextual answers, actionable cards and connected booking or lead paths
Before contact capture Some tested implementations requested contact details before a basic discovery conversation Guest can explore first; contact is requested when an unbookable or combined request requires follow-up
Complex requests No comparable public WSA journey was successfully reproduced in the tested deployments Maintains room, family, children, pet, facilities, tours, transfer and wellness context in one conversation
Visual offers Listing cards appeared in one tested deployment Multilingual cards for rooms, packages, facilities, dining, wellness, tours and destination content
Card destination Two card booking links returned a server error in one test; root cause could not be isolated publicly Cards are configured to verified hotel, booking-engine, provider or destination sources
Languages Multichannel messaging is promoted; full translation of structured website-sales cards was not publicly verified Hotel-selected languages across conversation, interface, cards and calls to action
Knowledge preparation Answers use the knowledge base supplied by the property and live PMS data MAIIA extracts, structures and enriches websites, listings, reviews, PDFs, menus and price lists for hotel review
Sales strategy Messaging, guest journeys, skills and timed upsells Strategies by hotel type, automatically adapted to the property and guest situation
Human handoff Akia promotes request workflows and department tasks; tested website chats sometimes ended with staff follow-up Contextual lead routed to the employee responsible for each service, preserving the whole conversation
Post-booking lifecycle A core Akia strength: arrival, messaging, digital check-in, requests, upsells and reviews Handled by the separate MAIIA Guest App, connected to the same intelligence layer
External AI discovery No equivalent public A2A handover to the website sales agent was identified in this review ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and compatible agents can access MAIIA through A2A and continue the journey on the hotel domain
Analytics Guest communication, journeys, operations and campaign reporting Question, answer, language, offers shown, clicks, engagement and requests across discovery, website and in-stay channels
Public pricing Website-sales chat price was not publicly itemised; quotation required From €100/month; €150/month up to 150 rooms; +€1 per room above 150
Good Confirmed / observed capability
Bad Fails or blocks the sales outcome
Partial Exists, incomplete, or not observed live

The reality test

We tested what the guest sees—not only what the vendor says

A website chat is commercially useful only if the guest receives an answer and can complete the next sensible step.

We tested several public Akia-powered websites in July and August 2026. Deployments and configurations can differ. These observations describe the specific public implementations and dates tested—not every Akia customer or every part of the Akia platform.

Ruby Hotel Akia web chat visibly marked offline
The widget opened, but displayed Offline. The interface was available; an automated sales conversation was not.
MAIIA Website Sales Agent opens with hotel-specific discovery options
Discovery starts immediately: rooms, facilities, pet policy, tours and transfers are available without a contact gate.
Kai Zanzibar Akia web chat contains a guest message without an answer
Status Online; no answer during the test. The message entered the thread, but the guest journey stopped.
MAIIA answers a combined family and dog request with facilities and visual cards
One combined request: MAIIA connects the children, dog, hotel facilities and relevant activities.
“Online” is a status label—not a buyer outcome. The only useful test is whether a real guest receives a useful answer and can continue towards a decision.
Akia shows two accommodation cards after a guest request
The strongest public WSA moment we found: Akia displayed available-unit cards with price-check actions.
Booking link opened from Akia card returns a server application error
The commercial path failed during the test: the linked booking page returned a server error.
MAIIA presents relevant room cards in the chat
Cards support the recommendation: the guest can inspect relevant rooms without leaving the conversation context.
Hotel booking engine opened from MAIIA room recommendation
The next step is real: the room action opens the booking system with selectable inventory and rates.
Important limitation: a failed link does not prove that Akia alone caused the failure. The hotel configuration, Escapia booking setup, availability parameters or another integration layer may be responsible. It does prove that the guest’s tested path did not complete.

Conversation flow

A contact form inside a chat window is not the same product

A live-chat inbox, contact form, FAQ assistant, automated messaging platform and website sales agent can look similar in a screenshot. They perform different jobs.

Understand the situation
Recommend the right offer
Show it visually
Open a verified action
Preserve context and measure
Akia asks for name email and phone before the chat begins
Value after data capture: the guest was required to submit contact details before asking a basic question; the phone field accepted malformed input in our test.
MAIIA asks for contact details only for a concrete pet-sitting request
Contact with a purpose: MAIIA requests details after identifying a specific service that requires human confirmation.

Platform scope

Akia’s real strength is broader than the website widget

Akia publicly describes one AI agent across guest messaging, phone, web chat, email, WhatsApp, social channels and OTA inboxes. It also promotes digital check-in, registration cards, request workflows, upsells, marketing and reputation management.

Its case studies report outcomes such as automated guest conversations, completed registration cards, time saved on check-ins and revenue from pre-arrival or post-stay campaigns. Those claims concern a broader guest-lifecycle product—not necessarily the quality of public website discovery.

This matters for a fair comparison. A hotel may reasonably choose Akia for messaging and post-booking operations. It should not assume that every one of those capabilities automatically creates a consultative Website Sales Agent.

Sales capability

Support automation and sales execution are different jobs

Capability Primary business outcome
Receive a message The hotel has another contact channel
Answer from a knowledge base Repetitive service questions can be automated
Trigger a guest journey Pre-arrival and in-stay communication becomes consistent
Create a departmental task Operations can follow up more reliably
Understand a combined buying situation The AI can qualify what the traveler actually needs
Recommend and visually present the right offer The AI can influence the buying decision
Open a verified commercial path The conversation can produce a direct booking or qualified lead

Setup reality

The product begins before the first guest message

A website sales agent is only as useful as the knowledge, product structure, links and sales logic behind it. Asking hotel employees to manually design that layer is one reason many AI projects remain limited to FAQs and generic flows.

3 hotel employees previously required for deep manual MAIIA preparation
30+ days the manual process could require before automation
3–7 days for a typical automated MAIIA setup and hotel review

MAIIA researches and structures hotel material from the website, Booking.com, reviews, PDFs, menus, wellness price lists and other supplied sources. It enriches the material, prepares commercial descriptions and proposes a property-specific sales strategy. The hotel reviews and approves.

When an authorised user clicks Save in the CMS, MAIIA immediately knows the approved change. The hotel does not pay separately for AI training or for the number of knowledge entries.

Content enrichment

From raw hotel material to a sellable offer

A wellness price list

MAIIA can turn a treatment name and price into a reviewable CMS product with description, recognised benefits, method, precautions, contraindications and an appropriate image.

A restaurant menu

MAIIA can prepare standard-recipe-based ingredients, estimated nutrition, allergens, dietary classifications, images and culturally useful descriptions. The hotel verifies its actual recipe and safety information before approval.

Unlimited hotel knowledge

MAIIA does not impose a predefined ceiling on hotel facts, rooms, menu items, treatments, packages, events, tours, CMS products or guest questions. A group account can hold the complete knowledge of 100 properties.

Multilingual commerce

Answering in a language is not the same as selling in it

Modern language models can reply in Japanese. The harder product problem is translating and maintaining the hotel’s actual structured offer.

MAIIA supports hotel-selected languages across the conversation, interface, room and service cards, packages, destination content and calls to action.

MAIIA recommends family accommodation while preserving context
The guest receives recommendations and visual offers—not only translated prose.

The guest speaks their language. Hotel staff read their own. Conversations can be displayed in the original language or translated into the language selected in the MAIIA CMS.

Visual commerce

Every card should have a verified purpose

Card type MAIIA destination
Room or package Hotel booking system or verified offer page
Wellness service Relevant hotel or wellness page
Tour or experience Provider information or booking page
Park, beach or attraction Tourism organisation or another verified source
Combined request Contextual lead routed to the responsible hotel team

Lead routing

One guest should remain one connected commercial context

When a service cannot be purchased directly, MAIIA can capture a contextual request and send it to the right team. If the guest later adds another service, MAIIA reuses the contact details already provided and adds the new request to the existing conversation.

MAIIA adds a wellness request to an earlier pet-sitting lead
Context becomes operational: MAIIA adds wellness to the earlier pet-sitting request without asking for the contact again.

AI discovery

A2A brings external AI discovery into the same sales journey

MAIIA’s A2A connection allows compatible assistants—including ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude—to access the same verified hotel knowledge and then continue the conversation with the hotel’s sales agent on its own domain.

Verdict

Akia connects guest communication channels. MAIIA connects AI discovery to the hotel’s Website Sales Agent and direct commercial journey.

Demand intelligence

What did the guest ask, what did the AI offer and what earned the click?

MAIIA records the question, answer, language, offers shown, card clicks, engagement and additional requests. Conversations can be viewed in their original language or translated for hotel staff.

MAIIA Business Assistant can analyse discovery-stage A2A requests, website conversations and—through the separate Guest App—in-stay demand. This creates one view of what travelers wanted across the funnel, not only a log of messages in one channel.

Pricing

€160,000+

in additional request and lead value

This excludes room bookings and other transactions MAIIA directed to the hotel booking engine. It represents the stated value of additional guest requests and qualified opportunities that required a lead or human confirmation.

This is lead value, not confirmed revenue. It should not be interpreted as though every request converted into a completed sale.

Buyer guide

Which platform should your hotel choose?

Akia may fit better when…

  • Cross-channel guest messaging is the main problem.
  • Digital check-in and registration cards are priorities.
  • Pre-arrival, in-stay and post-stay automations matter most.
  • Task workflows, reviews, voice and campaign messaging are central requirements.
  • You will separately verify the live website-sales journey.

MAIIA may fit better when…

  • The hotel website must sell—not only receive or answer messages.
  • Automatic setup and knowledge enrichment matter.
  • Guests bring complex, combined requests.
  • Translated visual cards and verified actions are required.
  • External AI assistants should feed the same sales journey.
  • Full-funnel demand, offer and engagement intelligence is required.

Summary

Final verdict

Akia addresses substantial hospitality problems. Its public product extends across messaging, arrivals, digital registration, guest requests, upsells, reviews and post-stay communication. This comparison does not conclude that those closed operational functions fail; we could not independently test them.

For the public Website Sales Agent experience, however, we found far less than the broad AI positioning initially suggested. Across multiple live implementations we encountered offline widgets, unanswered questions, contact-first flows, human follow-up and a card-to-booking path that failed during the test.

MAIIA WSA was built around the part that must work before the stay exists: understanding an undecided traveler, recommending the right combination, presenting it visually, opening a verified action and preserving the resulting commercial context.

Verdict

Do not compare hotel AI by counting claims. Open the live implementation, ask a difficult guest question and click every result.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this article claim that the entire Akia platform does not work?

No. We tested public website-chat implementations, not Akia’s private dashboard, phone, PMS, digital-check-in, campaign, reputation or post-booking workflows.

Did every Akia implementation behave identically?

No. The observed behaviors varied. That inconsistency is itself relevant to a hotel buyer, but each deployment should be tested individually.

Did Akia cause the booking-page server error?

We cannot determine that from a public test. The failure may involve hotel configuration, Escapia or another integration layer. The verified observation is that the guest’s tested card-to-booking path failed.

Is MAIIA Guest App part of this comparison?

No. This article compares Akia’s public website experience with MAIIA Website Sales Agent. MAIIA Guest App is the separate pre-arrival and in-stay product.

How long does MAIIA WSA setup take?

Depending on the sources and hotel review, a typical automated MAIIA setup can be prepared in approximately three to seven days.

Does MAIIA charge for AI training or knowledge volume?

No. MAIIA does not separately charge for AI training, number of knowledge entries, CMS products or guest questions.

What should a hotel request before choosing either product?

A live implementation, a complex guest scenario, a language change, card and booking-link tests, the CMS workflow, analytics, escalation logic, total implementation effort and a complete price quotation.

Methodology & sources

Methodology and sources

Public Akia-powered implementations were manually tested in July and August 2026, including Coastal Maine Vacations, Ruby Hotel & Bar, Kai Zanzibar Hotel & Spa and other publicly accessible deployments documented during the research. Tests describe the state observed at that time; availability and configuration may change.

MAIIA capabilities were demonstrated in a MAIIA WSA environment. MAIIA product and performance statements are first-party claims and should be validated by prospective buyers against their own scenario and contract.
